Leading the Field in Safety with Work Wallet

In British horse racing, The Jockey Club stands for heritage, excellence, and world-class sporting experiences.

In recent years, the organisation has also earned recognition for its strong commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing for everyone on its racecourses.

That dedication has now made The Jockey Club one of this year’s Safety Champions, celebrating its proactive approach and innovative use of safety technology.

By adopting the Work Wallet platform, they’ve set a new standard for modern, data-driven safety management across the racing industry.

Raising the Bar with Digital Safety Innovation

Managing multiple racecourses with thousands of visitors, staff, contractors, and competitors gives The Jockey Club a complex safety landscape.

On busy race days and during maintenance, their team coordinates precisely and shares updates in real time.

As a result, they maintain a safe, compliant environment from grandstands to back-of-house preparation.

That’s where Work Wallet has transformed their operations.

By adopting Work Wallet’s all-in-one Health & Safety platform, The Jockey Club has strengthened their safety culture through:

  • Streamlined incident and near-miss reporting: Instant reporting through mobile devices has empowered teams to capture issues quickly and accurately, helping prevent future incidents.
  • Improved contractor management: Ensuring every contractor on site is fully briefed, inducted, and compliant is now easier, faster, and fully auditable.
  • Real-time oversight across racecourses: Managers can now see what’s happening live – whether at Cheltenham, Aintree, Newmarket, or any other venue – strengthening decision-making and situational awareness.

The result? A connected workforce, simplified processes, and improved communication across all levels of the organisation.

A Culture of Safety Worth Celebrating

Technology alone doesn’t create a safe workplace – it’s the people who use it. And The Jockey Club’s teams have embraced the platform with enthusiasm, helping embed safety into everyday routines.

What truly sets them apart is their proactive culture:

  • Staff feel empowered to speak up and take action.
  • Leadership prioritises continuous improvement.
  • Safety conversations happen openly, not only during race events but throughout the year.
  • Issues are resolved faster, learning is shared more effectively, and risks are managed more confidently.

This collective effort is exactly why Darren Lander of The Jockey Club is being honoured as a Safety Champions winner.

The Jockey Club’s Experience with Work Wallet

At The Jockey Club, Work Wallet is now central to managing contractor and partner documentation across major temporary-structure builds. Cheltenham Festival provides a clear example of the scale and impact: each year, over 45,000 square metres of ground is prepared, with more than 100 contractors and partners involved. This year alone, 107 contractors submitted around 245 sets of RAMS documentation through Work Wallet.

Our document management tools streamline this entire process – giving teams the ability to review, approve, or reject submissions with clear, actionable feedback.

Transforming Site Inductions

The Jockey Club has also completely modernised its induction process using the Work Wallet inductions module. By moving away from in-person briefings, they can now ensure every contractor receives the correct safety information in advance, supported by custom question sets that verify understanding.

The results speak for themselves:

  • 1,745 inductions completed for Cheltenham last year
  • 873 inductions already completed this year

Issue Reporting That Captures the Right Detail

Since launching Work Wallet’s issue reporting in October 2024, the team has not necessarily seen an increase in overall reporting volume – but what has changed is the quality and completeness of the information captured. By tailoring the question sets, they now ensure every report includes the relevant detail needed for effective follow-up and safety management.

Issue reports logged since launch include:

  • 357 Accidents
  • 218 Near Misses
  • 190 Hazard Spots
  • 36 First Aid Treatments
  • 18 Welfare Issues

Looking Ahead: Continued Leadership in Safety

The Jockey Club fully earned its Safety Champions win, and this milestone marks only the beginning.

By using Work Wallet, they show how forward-thinking organisations modernise processes, protect people, and strengthen safety culture at every level.

By combining heritage with innovation, they are setting a powerful example for venues and sporting organisations across the UK.

Congratulations to The Jockey Club for leading the way and proving that safety truly comes first – both on and off the track.
