Freightliner: Turning Safety Challenges into Safety Wins
Freightliner UK are this month’s Safety Champions, thanks to how Shane Hill and the wider team have embraced our digital tools to make safety simple, quick, and part of everyone’s day.
The Challenge
In such a busy environment, health and safety has to be a top priority.
At Freightliner Southampton, the team identified that their traditional, paper-based briefing and inspection processes just weren’t keeping up.
Important safety information could take too long to share, meaning updates were sometimes out of date before they reached the right people.
With huge machinery like cranes, trains, and reach-stackers in constant use, even small delays in communication or maintenance could have big consequences for both safety and productivity.
Freightliner needed a faster, smarter way to deliver safety briefings, carry out inspections, and track maintenance, all while keeping everyone informed and connected.

The Solution
That’s where Work Wallet came in.
Freightliner adopted several key modules to help transform how safety is managed day to day, including:
- Issue Reporting – so anyone can log and track issues in seconds.
- Digital Permits to Work – speeding up approvals and keeping jobs safe.
- Audits and Inspections – simple, interactive, and accessible on mobile.
By embracing our digital tools, Shane Hill and the team at Freightliner turned what used to be a slow, paper-heavy process into a smooth, real-time system that fits naturally into daily operations.
“Using Work Wallet has allowed Freightliner Southampton to vastly improve on our previous briefing delivery methods and controls.
Moving from paper to digital has significantly improved staff communication, as well as making on-site contractor safety, document control and job assignment better.”
— Shane Hill, Safety and Sustainability Adviser

The Results
Since January, Freightliner has logged 3,655 safety issues, including:
- Over 2,707 Observations
- 2,639 Actions created
- More than 3,800 Audits conducted
That’s a huge sign of proactive engagement which is proof that the team is spotting and sharing issues early, not waiting for them to become problems.
With mobile access, operatives can record safety information as it happens, making it easier than ever to respond quickly and keep everyone in the loop.
The result? Faster action, better visibility, and a stronger, more connected safety culture.
The People Behind the Progress
Great tools are one thing but it’s the people using them that make the real difference.
Freightliner didn’t just adopt Work Wallet; they’ve made it an integral part of how they work, and that takes a huge team effort.
For powerful tools to be effective, the output is only ever as good as the input and Shane and the team at Freightliner have shown exactly that.
They’ve made safety reporting quicker, easier, and more collaborative across every site, creating a culture where everyone plays their part in keeping each other safe.
A big shout-out also goes to Freddie Lavers, Ian Steinmetz, and Paul Fortune for championing the system and encouraging others to get involved.
Their dedication and consistency have helped drive the culture shift we’re now celebrating! It shows what happens when people, process, and technology come together; turning safety into something that’s part of daily work, not just a tick-box exercise.
Congratulations!
