Soilfix: Building a safer culture with Work Wallet
Three years ago, Soilfix rolled out Work Wallet. For HSQE Manager, Lewis Hunt, it was never just about software.
“It’s about building a culture where everyone feels informed, involved and empowered; not just around safety, but across all aspects of the work. By introducing Work Wallet we’re making it easier for everyone to stay connected and up to date.”
– Lewis Hunt, HSQE Manager
Lewis knew that Work Wallet could help Soilfix move away from the old culture of limited reporting and reactive safety practices sometimes seen in safety management. Instead, it’s become a tool to encourage accountability, teamwork, and positive change.
Lewis: Driving change with data and process
Lewis has made Work Wallet part of everyday life at Soilfix — not just a compliance tool, but something that makes work simpler and safer.
- Incident investigations made easier — Before Work Wallet, investigations were often avoided or delayed. Now, with the investigation builder, teams follow a clear step-by-step process. Witness statements, photos, and root cause analysis all sit in one place, helping responses to be faster and more accurate.
- 1,158 observations submitted in just 36 months
- 132 site audits completed in the same timeframe
Driving for Work policy improved — Monthly vehicle inspections were introduced in March 2024. Since then, Soilfix has logged 300+ checks across 32 users.
Plant delivery checks sped up — Previously, only 77 paper-based checks were done in two years. With Work Wallet, Soilfix has recorded 100+ inspections in just 8 months. Each now takes under 5 minutes, compared to 30 before, with reports sent instantly to the Hire Desk.

A culture shift in reporting
Before Work Wallet, Soilfix recorded only 10–15 health and safety reports a year, mostly from senior staff. Today, the company averages 843 issue reports annually — an incredible 5,200% increase — with around 12 different reporters each month.
This means Soilfix can:
- Spot patterns and risks earlier
- Share lessons learned quickly
- Act faster on issues
- Give everyone the confidence to speak up, knowing their input matters

Ben: Leading on the ground
Ben Burgess, Site Supervisor, has also been key to bringing Work Wallet to life on-site. Starting as an operative five years ago, he is now a fully qualified Supervisor and an active member of the Health, Safety & Environmental Committee.
Ben leads by example. He reviews toolbox talks, sets high standards, and keeps communication open and clear. He also shows his team how simple Work Wallet is to use day-to-day.
Ben’s Numbers:
- 244 issue reports — second only to Lewis, making up 10% of all reports to date
- 77 audits — almost 20% of the total

Health & wellbeing
Ben also supports colleagues as someone who is keen to check in on his colleagues and looking to becoming a Health & Wellbeing champion. In one example, he reached out for advice on how to help an agency worker in need.
Ahead of the rollout of Soilfix’s new wellbeing policy, he has already volunteered to be one of the company’s first Health & Wellbeing Champions. This shows his commitment to putting people and safety first.
Compliance to collaboration
Together, Lewis and Ben have helped Soilfix move from:
- a culture of limited reporting and reactive safety practices
- To one where safety is a shared effort and processes are clear and consistent
Work Wallet has provided the platform, but it’s the dedication of champions like Lewis and Ben that has embedded change.
“A big driver of culture is where procedures and processes — not individual actions — are looked at first. It’s a team effort.”
– Lewis Hunt
